IMDB rating: 7.30 Plot: Jarhead (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows “Swoff” (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper’s rifle and a hundred-pound ruck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don’t understand against an enemy they can’t see for a cause they don’t fully fathom… Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer who heads up Swofford’s scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff’s friend and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit. |

Just Wondering… What Are Some Service Members' Opinions On "The Hurt Locker"?
I am aware that many military movies do not please the service (Jarhead for one) but I was wondering to hear on what you thought of Hurt Locker?
Thanks.
For a movie; I thought it was fairly accurate. A lot of people who responded to this question seemed to miss the point that you wanted their opinion on the film itself, not their thoughts on how accurate it was. Sure, there was stuff in there that was pretty ridiculous; the scene where he goes outside the wire by himself; for example, is totally BS. Even if you made it back alive; you would not be back on duty the next day like that; you’d be locked up somewhere getting questioned by CID. Overall, though, I thought it was a great film that showed soldiers at work downrange without any heavy-handed moralizing or political agenda.

i think jarhead was more accurate than the hurt locker.
sorry but eod isnt a bunch of bad asses in the army. infact their job is rather monotonous and boring most of the time.

Well I am not in the military but I can tell you that it was very inaccurate, a good movie tho. First troops move in convoys not in a single Hummer and there is going to be more than three men. The PMC you saw don’t act as bounty hunters they act as body/ security guards and they would not be carrying a barret .50 with them. And chances are an EOD tech would not be trained in sniping. A solider would not sneak off the base and if he did chances are he or she would not last 5 min. EOD techs are not going to go out and patrol after an IDE explosion, that would be infantry or MPs job. And being a Ranger mean your in the 75th, and he would be a sapper not a Ranger. And that is just what i can rember. The movie was meant to show what different MOS do in Iraq.

It was a load of crap. Pure Hollywood BS. BTW Jarhead was actually fairly accurate for what servicemen go through while deployed.

Its hollywood not Iraq, If you want to see what its like in Iraq go and see for yourself. Don’t watch a movie and assume you know. The real war will never get in the books or movies, it never has and never will.
